Label Stories: Following Your Passion With Mountain Culture Kombucha

Mountain Culture Kombucha LogoAt, one of the most exciting parts of what we do is working with small businesses and seeing how they turn their passion into financial success. In this installment of our series of Label Stories, we spoke with Peter Roderick of Mountain Culture Kombucha, who turned a passion for Kombucha into a successful business.

Peter had been drinking Kombucha, a fermented tea drink, his whole life, and he began making it on his own when he was a teenager. “I started making my own Kombucha because I was tired of spending so much money buying it,” he says. “I ended up making more than I could drink on my own, so I started taking it to farmers’ markets and trading it with people there, and it got popular enough that people started asking about it, and I realized that I could turn it into a business.”

Peter got started by supplying weekly orders to clients, delivering a six-pack of bottles each week, and then collecting and refilling the bottles, similar to a milkman. As demand for his product grew, he worked on turning it into a real business, and began supplying his drinks to farmers’ markets and local stores. When he started in 2012, his products were available in four local stores. They are now available in over 90 stores in the Virginia area, and they will soon be sold in Wegmans and other East Coast chain stores.

As his business grew, he began looking for a more industrial option to provide professionally printed labels that could be machine applied. He found through Google. “What initially drew me in was the ability to get an instant quote,” he says. “I was able to put in what I wanted and instantly find out the cost, and they contacted me within a day or two to finalize the order.

“YLN’s design team was very helpful and accommodating. Their art department was a great help; they found and addressed any technical issues with the art files and even caught some typos before we went to print. They have a fast turnaround, the labels look great, and they have really good prices in comparison to other companies.”

When asked for advice about how to follow your passion when building a business, Peter emphasized the importance of “just going for it.” He said, “Sometimes it’s better not to know what you’re getting into. Running a business is complicated, and you have to be prepared to spend a lot of time without much money for a few years. But if you have a passion for what you do, you’ll be motivated to keep going, to keep getting up every day and putting one foot in front of the other. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and get help from people with experience. There are always people in your local community who are willing to help.”
